### TSI Overview

The math TSI (Texas Success Initiative) assessment required to ensure students have the knowledge necessary for college level courses. Though there are a number of TSI subjects. here we will focus on the TSI math. This TSI math assessment will be un-timed. You will not be allowed to bring a calculator, but some questions may have a calculator that you can access on the computer.

There will be about 20 questions to complete for the **Placement Test**. After completing these questions, the test will end if you meet the college readiness benchmark. For those that don’t meet this benchmark, an additional **Diagnostic Test** of approximately 40 additional questions will be completed. Both the first 20 questions and subsequent 40 questions will come from 4 sections. These sections are elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, statistics, and geometry. You can find step-by-step answers and more information about each section in addition to basic math below.

### Basic math

While this is not a specific section, the skills covered will be required to understand the subsequent questions. Be sure you understand how to approach and solve each of these questions before moving on.

### elementary algebra

The **Placement Test** will have 6 questions from this section. While the **Diagnostic Test** will 10 questions from this section. Topics in this section include: linear equations, inequalities and inequality systems, algebraic expressions and equations, word problems and applications.

### intermediate algebra

The **Placement Test** will have 9 questions from this section. While the **Diagnostic Test** will 10 questions from this section. Topics in this section include: quadratic and polynomial expressions, equations and functions, expressions, equations and functions with powers, radicals and roots, exponential and rational equations, expressions and functions.

### data analysis & statistics

The **Placement Test** will have 3 questions from this section. While the **Diagnostic Test** will 10 questions from this section. Topics in this section include: interpreting categorical and quantitative data, statistical measures, and probabilistic reasoning.

### geometry & measurement

The **Placement Test** will have 2 questions from this section. While the **Diagnostic Test** will 10 questions from this section. Topics in this section include: plane geometry, transformations and symmetry, linear, area, and three-dimensional measurements.
